2025-03-12math: Refactor how to use libm-test-ulpsAdhemerval Zanella1-4/+0
The current approach tracks math maximum supported errors by explicitly setting them per function and architecture. On newer implementations or new compiler versions, the file is updated with newer values if it shows higher results. The idea is to track the maximum known error, to update the manual with the obtained values. The constant libm-test-ulps shows little value, where it is usually a mechanical change done by the maintainer, for past releases it is usually ignored whether the ulp change resulted from a compiler regression, and the math tests already have a maximum ulp error that triggers a regression. It was shown by a recent update after the new acosf [1] implementation that is correctly rounded, where the libm-test-ulps was indeed from a compiler issue. This patch removes all arch-specific libm-test-ulps, adds system generic libm-test-ulps where applicable, and changes its semantics. The generic files now track specific implementation constraints, like if it is expected to be correctly rounded, or if the system-specific has different error expectations. Now multiple libm-test-ulps can be defined, and system-specific overrides generic implementation. This is for the case where arch-specific implementation might show worse precision than generic implementation, for instance, the cbrtf on i686. Regressions are only reported if the implementation shows larger errors than 9 ulps (13 for IBM long double) unless it is overridden by libm-test-ulps and the maximum error is not printed at the end of tests. The regen-ulps rule is also removed since it does not make sense to update the libm-test-ulps automatically. The manual error table is also removed, Paul Zimmermann and others have been tracking libm precision with a more comprehensive analysis for some releases; so link to his work instead. 2025-01-04Rename have-mtls-descriptor to have-test-mtls-descriptorH.J. Lu1-2/+0
Since have-mtls-descriptor is only used for glibc testing, rename it to have-test-mtls-descriptor. Also enable tst-gnu2-tls2-amx only if $(have-test-mtls-descriptor) == gnu2. Tested with GCC 14 and Clang 19/18/17 on x86-64. Signed-off-by: H.J. Lu <hjl.tools@gmail.com> Reviewed-by: Sam James <sam@gentoo.org>
2024-12-14Makefile.in: Add test to check xcheck ruleH.J. Lu1-1/+1
Add test to check xcheck rule so that TEST_CC and TEST_CXX are used for "make test". Signed-off-by: H.J. Lu <hjl.tools@gmail.com> Reviewed-by: Sam James <sam@gentoo.org>
2024-12-11Add TEST_CC and TEST_CXX supportH.J. Lu1-0/+26
Support testing glibc build with a different C compiler or a different C++ compiler with $ ../glibc-VERSION/configure TEST_CC="gcc-6.4.1" TEST_CXX="g++-6.4.1" 1. Add LIBC_TRY_CC_AND_TEST_CC_OPTION, LIBC_TRY_CC_AND_TEST_CC_COMMAND and LIBC_TRY_CC_AND_TEST_LINK to test both CC and TEST_CC. 2. Add check and xcheck targets to Makefile.in and override build compiler options with ones from TEST_CC and TEST_CXX. Tested on Fedora 41/x86-64: 1. Building with GCC 14.2.1 and testing with GCC 6.4.1 and GCC 11.2.1. 2. Building with GCC 15 and testing with GCC 6.4.1. Support for GCC versions older than GCC 6.2 may need to change the test sources. Other targets may need to update configure.ac under sysdeps and modify Makefile.in to override target build compiler options. Signed-off-by: H.J. 2016-04-20New make target to only build benchmark binariesSiddhesh Poyarekar1-1/+1
For situations where we are cross-building or where we want to avoid building on the target system, we want a way to only build benchmarks and then copy them over to the target system to run them. I have also added a simple enhancement for the 'bench' target where all benchmark binaries are built and then the benchmarks executed. Tested on arm. Makefile.in (bench-build): New target. Rules (PHONY): Add bench-build target. benchtests/Makefile (bench): Depend on bench-build. (bench-build): New target.
2014-06-07Remove redundant C locale settings.Joseph Myers1-1/+1
Various glibc build / install / test code has C locale settings that are redundant with LC_ALL=C. LC_ALL takes precedence over LANG, so anywhere that sets LC_ALL=C (explicitly, or through it being in the default environment for running tests) does not need to set LANG=C. LC_ALL=C also takes precedence over LANGUAGE, since 2001-01-02 Ulrich Drepper <drepper@redhat.com> * intl/dcigettext.c (guess_category_value): Rewrite so that LANGUAGE value is ignored if the selected locale is the C locale. * intl/tst-gettext.c: Set locale for above change. * intl/tst-translit.c: Likewise. and so settings of LANGUAGE=C are also redundant when LC_ALL=C is set. One test also had LC_ALL=C in its -ENV setting, although it's part of the default environment used for tests. This patch removes the redundant settings. It removes a suggestion in install.texi of setting LANGUAGE=C LC_ALL=C for "make install"; the Makefile.in target "install" already sets LC_ALL_C so there's no need for the user to set it (and nor should there be any need for the user to set it). If some build machine tool used by "make install" uses a version of libintl predating that 2001 change, and the user has LANGUAGE set, the removal of LANGUAGE=C from the Makefile.in "install" rule could in principle affect the user's installation. However, I don't think we need to be concerned about pre-2001 build tools. Tested x86_64. * Makefile (install): Don't set LANGUAGE. * Makefile.in (install): Likewise. * assert/Makefile (test-assert-ENV): Remove variable. 2013-04-06New Makefile target `regen-ulps'.Carlos O'Donell1-0/+4
The wiki "Regeneration" page has this to say about update ULPs. "The libm-test-ulps files are semiautomatically updated. To update an ulps baseline, run each of the failing tests (test-float, test-double, etc.) with -u; this will generate a file called ULPs; concatenate each of those files with the existing libm-test-ulps file, after removing any entries for particularly huge numbers of ulps that you do not want to mark as expected. Then run gen-libm-test.pl -n -u FILE where FILE is the concatenated file produced in the previous step. This generates a file called NewUlps which is the new sorted version of libm-test-ulps." The same information is listed in math/README.libm-test, and is a lot of manual work that you often want to run over-and-over again while working on a particular test. The `regen-ulps' convenience target does this automatically for developers. We strictly assume the source tree is readonly and add a new --output-dir option to libm-test.inc to allow for writing out ULPs to $(objpfx). When run the new target does the following: * Starts with the baseline ULPs file. * Runs each of the libm math tests with -u. * Adds new changes seen with -u to the baseline. * Sorts and prepares the test output with gen-libm-test.pl. * Leaves math/NewUlps in your build tree to copy to your source tree, cleanup, and checkin. The math test documentation in math/README.libm-test is updated document the new Makefile target. --- 2013-04-06 Carlos O'Donell <carlos@redhat.com> * Makefile.in (regen-ulps): New target. * math/Makefile [ifneq (no,$(PERL)]: Declare regen-ulps with .PHONY.
