This is required so that fclose, when trying to seek to the right position after filling the input buffer, does not fail with EINVAL. This fclose code path only ignores ESPIPE errors. As discussed in bug 32529, fseek fails on files opened for reading using mmap after ungetc. The implementation of fseek for such files has an offset computation that's also incorrect after fflush. A combined fix addresses both problems (with tests for both included as well) and it seems reasonable to consider them a single bug. Tested for x86_64.
2025-01-28Make fclose seek input file to right offset (bug 12724)Joseph Myers1-5/+38
As discussed in bug 12724 and required by POSIX, before an input file (based on an underlying seekable file descriptor) is closed, fclose is sometimes required to seek that file descriptor to the correct offset, so that any other file descriptors sharing the underlying open file description are left at that offset (as a motivating example, a script could call a sequence of commands each of which processes some data from (seekable) stdin using stdio; fclose needs to do this so that each successive command can read exactly the data not handled by previous commands), but glibc fails to do this. The precise POSIX wording has changed a few times; in the 2024 edition it's "If the file is not already at EOF, and the file is one capable of seeking, the file offset of the underlying open file description shall be set to the file position of the stream if the stream is the active handle to the underlying file description.". Add appropriate logic to _IO_new_file_close_it to handle this case. I haven't made any attempt to test or change things in this area for the "old" functions. Note that there was a previous attempt to fix bug 12724, reverted in commit eb6cbd249f4465b01f428057bf6ab61f5f0c07e3. The fix version here addresses the original test in that bug report without breaking the one given in a subsequent comment in that bug report (which works with glibc before the patch, but maybe was broken by the original fix that was reverted). The logic here tries to take care not to seek the file, even to its newly computed current offset, if at EOF / possibly not the active handle; even seeking to the current offset would be problematic because of a potential race (fclose computes the current offset, another thread or process with the active handle does its own seek, fclose does a seek (not permitted by POSIX in this case) that loses the effect of the seek on the active handle in another thread or process). There are tests included for various cases of being or not being the active handle, though there aren't tests for the potential race condition. Tested for x86_64.
2025-01-28Fix fflush after ungetc on input file (bug 5994)Joseph Myers1-0/+5
As discussed in bug 5994 (plus duplicates), POSIX requires fflush after ungetc to discard pushed-back characters but preserve the file position indicator. For this purpose, each ungetc decrements the file position indicator by 1; it is unspecified after ungetc at the start of the file, and after ungetwc, so no special handling is needed for either of those cases. This is fixed with appropriate logic in _IO_new_file_sync. I haven't made any attempt to test or change things in this area for the "old" functions; the case of files using mmap is addressed in a subsequent patch (and there seem to be no problems in this area with files opened with fmemopen). Tested for x86_64.
2025-01-28libio: Start to return errors when flushing fwrite's buffer [BZ #29459]Tulio Magno Quites Machado Filho1-0/+2
When an error happens, fwrite is expected to return a value that is less than nmemb. If this error happens while flushing its internal buffer, fwrite is in a complex scenario: all the data might have been written to the buffer, indicating a successful copy, but the buffer is expected to be flushed and it was not. POSIX.1-2024 states the following about errors on fwrite: If an error occurs, the resulting value of the file-position indicator for the stream is unspecified. The fwrite() function shall return the number of elements successfully written, which may be less than nitems if a write error is encountered. With that in mind, this commit modifies _IO_new_file_write in order to return the total number of bytes written via the file pointer. It also modifies fwrite in order to use the new information and return the correct number of bytes written even when sputn returns EOF. Add 2 tests: 1. tst-fwrite-bz29459: This test is based on the reproducer attached to bug 29459. In order to work, it requires to pipe stdout to another process making it hard to reuse test-driver.c. This code is more specific to the issue reported. 2. tst-fwrite-pipe: Recreates the issue by creating a pipe that is shared with a child process. Reuses test-driver.c. 2024-12-17ungetc: Guarantee single char pushbackSiddhesh Poyarekar1-3/+4
The C standard requires that ungetc guarantees at least one pushback, but the malloc call to allocate the pushback buffer could fail, thus violating that requirement. Fix this by adding a single byte pushback buffer in the FILE struct that the pushback can fall back to if malloc fails. The side-effect is that if the initial malloc fails and the 1-byte fallback buffer is used, future resizing (if it succeeds) will be 2-bytes, 4-bytes and so on, which is suboptimal but it's after a malloc failure, so maybe even desirable. A future optimization here could be to have the pushback code use the single byte buffer first and only fall back to malloc for subsequent calls. In processing the first 7 individual characters of the mode for fopen if ,ccs= is used those characters will be processed as well. Stop processing individual mode flags once a comma is encountered. This has the effect of requiring ,ccs= to be the last mode flag in the mode string. Add a testcase to check that the ,ccs= mode flag is not processed as individual mode flags. Instead of using a special ELF section along with a linker script directive to put the IO vtables within the RELRO section, the libio vtables are all moved to an array marked as data.relro (so linker will place in the RELRO segment without the need of extra directives). To avoid static linking namespace issues and including all vtable referenced objects, all required function pointers are set to weak alias. 2021-09-03Remove "Contributed by" linesSiddhesh Poyarekar1-1/+0
We stopped adding "Contributed by" or similar lines in sources in 2012 in favour of git logs and keeping the Contributors section of the glibc manual up to date. Removing these lines makes the license header a bit more consistent across files and also removes the possibility of error in attribution when license blocks or files are copied across since the contributed-by lines don't actually reflect reality in those cases. Move all "Contributed by" and similar lines (Written by, Test by, etc.) into a new file CONTRIBUTED-BY to retain record of these contributions. These contributors are also mentioned in manual/contrib.texi, so we just maintain this additional record as a courtesy to the earlier developers. The following scripts were used to filter a list of files to edit in place and to clean up the CONTRIBUTED-BY file respectively. libio can only deal with gconv conversions which consist of a single step. Not using __gconv_info simplifies the data structures somewhat. This eliminates a new GCC 10 warning about subscribing an inner zero-length array. Tested on x86_64-linux-gnu with mainline GCC. Built with build-many-glibcs.py, also with mainline GCC. The codecvt vtable is not a real vtable because it also contains the conversion state data. Furthermore, wide stream support was added to GCC 3.0, after a C++ ABI bump, so there is no compatibility requirement with libstdc++. This change removes several unmangled function pointers which could be used with a corrupted FILE object to redirect execution. (libio vtable verification did not cover the codecvt vtable.) 2018-03-13[BZ 1190] Make EOF sticky in stdio.Zack Weinberg1-4/+3
C99 specifies that the EOF condition on a file is "sticky": once EOF has been encountered, all subsequent reads should continue to return EOF until the file is closed or something clears the "end-of-file indicator" (e.g. fseek, clearerr). This is arguably a change from C89, where the wording was ambiguous; the BSDs always had sticky EOF, but the System V lineage would attempt to read from the underlying fd again. GNU libc has followed System V for as long as we've been using libio, but nowadays C99 conformance and BSD compatibility are more important than System V compatibility. You might wonder if changing the _underflow impls is sufficient to apply the C99 semantics to all of the many stdio functions that perform input. It should be enough to cover all paths to _IO_SYSREAD, and the only other functions that call _IO_SYSREAD are the _seekoff impls, which is OK because seeking clears EOF, and the _xsgetn impls, which, as far as I can tell, are unused within glibc. The test programs in this patch use a pseudoterminal to set up the necessary conditions. To facilitate this I added a new test-support function that sets up a pair of pty file descriptors for you; it's almost the same as BSD openpty, the only differences are that it allocates the optionally-returned tty pathname with malloc, and that it crashes if anything goes wrong. I preserved IO_DEBUG and CHECK_FILE, even though as far as I can tell IO_DEBUG is never defined and therefore CHECK_FILE never does anything, because it seems like we might actually want to turn it _on_. 2018-02-07Post-cleanup 2: minimize _G_config.h.Zack Weinberg1-1/+1
Nearly everything in _G_config.h is either junk or more appropriately defined elsewhere: * _G_fpos_t, _G_fpos64_t, and _G_BUFSIZ are already completely unused. * All remaining uses of _G_va_list have been changed to __gnuc_va_list. * The definition of _G_HAVE_ST_BLKSIZE/_IO_HAVE_ST_BLKSIZE has been inlined into its sole use. * The complete definition of _G_iconv_t has been moved to libio.h and renamed _IO_iconv_t (all actual users used that name). * _G_IO_IO_FILE_VERSION is vestigial; some code cares whether _IO_stdin_used exists, but nothing looks at its value. I've preserved the value as a hardwired constant in csu/init.c. This means csu/init.c no longer needs to include anything. * Many of the headers included by _G_config.h were already being included directly by either either libio.h or stdio.h; the remaining ones were moved to libio.h. * _G_HAVE_MREMAP is still relevant, because mremap genuinely is a Linux extension; it's not in POSIX and as far as I can tell it's not available on the Hurd either. I also preserved _G_HAVE_MMAP, since it's conceivable someone would want to port glibc to a MMU-less, mmap-less environment in the future. Both are now always defined to 1/0 as is the current convention, instead of the older 1/undef convention. These are the only symbols still defined in _G_config.h. * The actual inclusion of _G_config.h moves from libio.h to libioP.h, as this is where a potential override of _G_HAVE_MMAP happens. * The #ifdef logic in libioP.h controlling _IO_JUMPS_OFFSET has been simplified. After this patch, the only surviving _G_ symbols are the struct tag names _G_fpos_t and _G_fpos64_t, which are preserved for the sake of C++ mangled names in applications, and _G_HAVE_MMAP and _G_HAVE_MREMAP, which do not seem worth renaming. Installed stripped libraries are unchanged by this patch. * bits/_G_config.h: Move back to sysdeps/generic/_G_config.h. Delete all contents except for definitions of _G_HAVE_MMAP and _G_HAVE_MREMAP. Some libio operations fail to correctly free the backup area (created by _IO_{w}default_pbackfail on unget{w}c) resulting in either invalid buffer free operations or memory leaks. For instance, on the example provided by BZ#22415 a following fputc after a fseek to rewind the stream issues an invalid free on the buffer. It is because although _IO_file_overflow correctly (from fputc) correctly calls _IO_free_backup_area, the _IO_new_file_seekoff (called by fseek) updates the FILE internal pointers without first free the backup area (resulting in invalid values in the internal pointers). The wide version also shows an issue, but instead of accessing invalid pointers it leaks the backup memory on fseek/fputwc operation. Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu and i686-linux-gnu. * libio/Makefile (tests): Add tst-bz22415. (tst-bz22415-ENV): New rule. (generated): Add tst-bz22415.mtrace and tst-bz22415.check. (tests-special): Add tst-bz22415-mem.out. ($(objpfx)tst-bz22415-mem.out): New rule. * libio/fileops.c (_IO_new_file_seekoff): Call _IO_free_backup_area in case of a successful seek operation. * libio/wfileops.c (_IO_wfile_seekoff): Likewise. This patch consolidates all the non cancellable close calls to use the __close_nocancel{_nostatus} identifier. For non cancellable targets it will be just a macro to call the default respective symbol while on Linux will be a internal one. Also, since it is used on libcrypto it is also exported in GLIBC_PRIVATE namespace.
