2023-09-05linux: Add pidfd_getpidAdhemerval Zanella Netto1-0/+38
This interface allows to obtain the associated process ID from the process file descriptor. It is done by parsing the procps fdinfo information. Its prototype is: pid_t pidfd_getpid (int fd) It returns the associated pid or -1 in case of an error and sets the errno accordingly. The possible errno values are those from open, read, and close (used on procps parsing), along with: - EBADF if the FD is negative, does not have a PID associated, or if the fdinfo fields contain a value larger than pid_t. - EREMOTE if the PID is in a separate namespace. - ESRCH if the process is already terminated. Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu on Linux 4.15 (no CLONE_PIDFD or waitid support), Linux 5.4 (full support), and Linux 6.2. Reviewed-by: Florian Weimer <fweimer@redhat.com>
2023-09-05posix: Add pidfd_spawn and pidfd_spawnp (BZ 30349)Adhemerval Zanella Netto1-7/+7
Returning a pidfd allows a process to keep a race-free handle for a child process, otherwise, the caller will need to either use pidfd_open (which still might be subject to TOCTOU) or keep the old racy interface base on pid_t. To correct use pifd_spawn, the kernel must support not only returning the pidfd with clone/clone3 but also waitid (P_PIDFD) (added on Linux 5.4). If kernel does not support the waitid, pidfd return ENOSYS. It avoids the need to racy workarounds, such as reading the procfs fdinfo to get the pid to use along with other wait interfaces. These interfaces are similar to the posix_spawn and posix_spawnp, with the only difference being it returns a process file descriptor (int) instead of a process ID (pid_t). Their prototypes are: int pidfd_spawn (int *restrict pidfd, const char *restrict file, const posix_spawn_file_actions_t *restrict facts, const posix_spawnattr_t *restrict attrp, char *const argv[restrict], char *const envp[restrict]) int pidfd_spawnp (int *restrict pidfd, const char *restrict path, const posix_spawn_file_actions_t *restrict facts, const posix_spawnattr_t *restrict attrp, char *const argv[restrict_arr], char *const envp[restrict_arr]); A new symbol is used instead of a posix_spawn extension to avoid possible issues with language bindings that might track the return argument lifetime. Although on Linux pid_t and int are interchangeable, POSIX only states that pid_t should be a signed integer. Both symbols reuse the posix_spawn posix_spawn_file_actions_t and posix_spawnattr_t, to void rehash posix_spawn API or add a new one. It also means that both interfaces support the same attribute and file actions, and a new flag or file action on posix_spawn is also added automatically for pidfd_spawn. Also, using posix_spawn plumbing allows the reusing of most of the current testing with some changes: - waitid is used instead of waitpid since it is a more generic interface. - tst-posix_spawn-setsid.c is adapted to take into consideration that the caller can check for session id directly. The test now spawns itself and writes the session id as a file instead. - tst-spawn3.c need to know where pidfd_spawn is used so it keeps an extra file description unused. Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu on Linux 4.15 (no CLONE_PIDFD or waitid support), Linux 5.4 (full support), and Linux 6.2. Reviewed-by: Florian Weimer <fweimer@redhat.com>

2022-04-14nptl: Handle spurious EINTR when thread cancellation is disabled (BZ#29029)Adhemerval Zanella1-2/+1
Some Linux interfaces never restart after being interrupted by a signal handler, regardless of the use of SA_RESTART [1]. It means that for pthread cancellation, if the target thread disables cancellation with pthread_setcancelstate and calls such interfaces (like poll or select), it should not see spurious EINTR failures due the internal SIGCANCEL. However recent changes made pthread_cancel to always sent the internal signal, regardless of the target thread cancellation status or type. To fix it, the previous semantic is restored, where the cancel signal is only sent if the target thread has cancelation enabled in asynchronous mode. The cancel state and cancel type is moved back to cancelhandling and atomic operation are used to synchronize between threads. The patch essentially revert the following commits: 8c1c0aae20 nptl: Move cancel type out of cancelhandling 2b51742531 nptl: Move cancel state out of cancelhandling 26cfbb7162 nptl: Remove CANCELING_BITMASK However I changed the atomic operation to follow the internal C11 semantic and removed the MACRO usage, it simplifies a bit the resulting code (and removes another usage of the old atomic macros). Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu, i686-linux-gnu, aarch64-linux-gnu, and powerpc64-linux-gnu. 2021-06-28posix: Add _Fork [BZ #4737]Adhemerval Zanella1-15/+26
Austin Group issue 62 [1] dropped the async-signal-safe requirement for fork and provided a async-signal-safe _Fork replacement that does not run the atfork handlers. It will be included in the next POSIX standard. It allow to close a long standing issue to make fork AS-safe (BZ#4737). As indicated on the bug, besides the internal lock for the atfork handlers itself; there is no guarantee that the handlers itself will not introduce more AS-safe issues. The idea is synchronize fork with the required internal locks to allow children in multithread processes to use mostly of standard function (even though POSIX states only AS-safe function should be used). On signal handles, _Fork should be used intead and only AS-safe functions should be used. For testing, the new tst-_Fork only check basic usage. I also added a new tst-mallocfork3 which uses the same strategy to check for deadlock of tst-mallocfork2 but using threads instead of subprocesses (and it does deadlock if it replaces _Fork with fork). 2021-06-09nptl: Move cancel state out of cancelhandlingAdhemerval Zanella1-2/+1
Now that thread cancellation state is not accessed concurrently anymore, it is possible to move it out the 'cancelhandling'. The code is also simplified: CANCELLATION_P is replaced with a internal pthread_testcancel call and the CANCELSTATE_BIT{MASK} is removed. With this behavior pthread_setcancelstate does not require to act on cancellation if cancel type is asynchronous (is already handled either by pthread_setcanceltype or by the signal handler). Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu and aarch64-linux-gnu.

2017-06-15manual: Replace summary.awk with summary.pl.Rical Jasan1-46/+23
The Summary is now generated from @standards, and syntax-checking is performed. If invalid @standards syntax is detected, summary.pl will fail, reporting all errors. Failure and error reporting is disabled for now, however, since much of the manual is still incomplete wrt. header and standards annotations. Note that the sorting order of the Summary has changed; summary.pl respects the locale, like summary.awk did, but the use of LC_ALL=C is introduced in the Makefile. Other notable deviations are improved detection of the annotated elements' names, which are used for sorting, and improved detection of the @node used to reference into the manual. The most noticeable difference in the rendered Summary is that entries may now contain multiple lines, one for each header and standard combination. summary.pl accepts a `--help' option, which details the expected syntax of @standards. If errors are reported, the user is directed to this feature for further information. * manual/Makefile: Generate summary.texi with summary.pl. Force use of the C locale. 2016-12-21manual: Convert @tables of variables to @vtables.Rical Jasan1-4/+4
Texinfo @vindex commands add entries to the Variable and Constant Macro Index. Similarly, @items in @vtables are automatically indexed. A number of @tables exist where all @items are @vindexed or all @items are variables, but not indexed, suggesting an optimization by converting such @tables to @vtables and dropping the @vindex. Using a @vtable provides a context for processing @items whereby it can be known the @items should have header and standards annotations. This commit converts @tables of such @items to @vtables in order to establish a framework for automated processing. A pleasant consequence of these changes is that @items previously lacking a @vindex are present in the Variable and Constant Macro Index now. @vindex entries previously detected by summary.awk will still be detected as @items with appropriate annotations. The @vtable of the NSS databases is converted to a @table because 1) those @items are not variables (and will no longer appear in the Variable and Constant Macro Index) and 2) they do not need header and standards annotations, so the incorrect context is fixed. * manual/nss.texi: Change incorrect @vtable to @table. * manual/arith.texi: Convert @tables of variables to @vtables and remove unnecessary indexing. * manual/filesys.texi: Likewise. * manual/llio.texi: Likewise. * manual/memory.texi: Likewise. * manual/process.texi: Likewise. * manual/resource.texi: Likewise. * manual/search.texi: Likewise. * manual/signal.texi: Likewise. * manual/socket.texi: Likewise. * manual/stdio.texi: Likewise. * manual/sysinfo.texi: Likewise. * manual/syslog.texi: Likewise. * manual/terminal.texi: Likewise. * manual/time.texi: Likewise. * manual/users.texi: Likewise.
