2025-03-12math: Refactor how to use libm-test-ulpsAdhemerval Zanella2-154/+0
The current approach tracks math maximum supported errors by explicitly setting them per function and architecture. On newer implementations or new compiler versions, the file is updated with newer values if it shows higher results. The idea is to track the maximum known error, to update the manual with the obtained values. The constant libm-test-ulps shows little value, where it is usually a mechanical change done by the maintainer, for past releases it is usually ignored whether the ulp change resulted from a compiler regression, and the math tests already have a maximum ulp error that triggers a regression. It was shown by a recent update after the new acosf [1] implementation that is correctly rounded, where the libm-test-ulps was indeed from a compiler issue. This patch removes all arch-specific libm-test-ulps, adds system generic libm-test-ulps where applicable, and changes its semantics. The generic files now track specific implementation constraints, like if it is expected to be correctly rounded, or if the system-specific has different error expectations. Now multiple libm-test-ulps can be defined, and system-specific overrides generic implementation. This is for the case where arch-specific implementation might show worse precision than generic implementation, for instance, the cbrtf on i686. Regressions are only reported if the implementation shows larger errors than 9 ulps (13 for IBM long double) unless it is overridden by libm-test-ulps and the maximum error is not printed at the end of tests. The regen-ulps rule is also removed since it does not make sense to update the libm-test-ulps automatically. The manual error table is also removed, Paul Zimmermann and others have been tracking libm precision with a more comprehensive analysis for some releases; so link to his work instead. 2024-06-17Implement C23 logp1Joseph Myers1-0/+3
C23 adds various <math.h> function families originally defined in TS 18661-4. Add the logp1 functions (aliases for log1p functions - the name is intended to be more consistent with the new log2p1 and log10p1, where clearly it would have been very confusing to name those functions log21p and log101p). As aliases rather than new functions, the content of this patch is somewhat different from those actually adding new functions. Tests are shared with log1p, so this patch *does* mechanically update all affected libm-test-ulps files to expect the same errors for both functions. The vector versions of log1p on aarch64 and x86_64 are *not* updated to have logp1 aliases (and thus there are no corresponding header, tests, abilist or ulps changes for vector functions either). It would be reasonable for such vector aliases and corresponding changes to other files to be made separately. For now, the log1p tests instead avoid testing logp1 in the vector case (a Makefile change is needed to avoid problems with grep, used in generating the .c files for vector function tests, matching more than one ALL_RM_TEST line in a file testing multiple functions with the same inputs, when it assumes that the .inc file only has a single such line). Tested for x86_64 and x86, and with build-many-glibcs.py.

2020-01-03Add libm_alias_finite for _finite symbolsWilco Dijkstra2-2/+6
This patch adds a new macro, libm_alias_finite, to define all _finite symbol. It sets all _finite symbol as compat symbol based on its first version (obtained from the definition at built generated first-versions.h). The <fn>f128_finite symbols were introduced in GLIBC 2.26 and so need special treatment in code that is shared between long double and float128. It is done by adding a list, similar to internal symbol redifinition, on sysdeps/ieee754/float128/float128_private.h. Alpha also needs some tricky changes to ensure we still emit 2 compat symbols for sqrt(f). Passes buildmanyglibc. 2018-09-14Use rint functions not __rint functions in glibc libm.Joseph Myers2-0/+2
Continuing the move to use, within libm, public names for libm functions that can be inlined as built-in functions on many architectures, this patch moves calls to __rint functions to call the corresponding rint names instead, with asm redirection to __rint when the calls are not inlined. This patch is relative to a tree with my floor patch <https://sourceware.org/ml/libc-alpha/2018-09/msg00148.html> applied, and much the same considerations arise regarding possibly replacing an IFUNC call with a direct inline expansion. 2018-02-01Remove some math_private.h libc_feholdexcept_setround overrides.Joseph Myers1-10/+0
math_private.h headers for configurations lacking support for floating-point exceptions and rounding modes define libc_feholdexcept_setround to override the default version with one that discards its rounding mode argument. Unlike other such libc_fe* macros that I removed, this one is actually used for such configurations (in dbl-64/e_sqrt.c). However, this does not make the macro required. It's only used for such configurations with FE_TONEAREST as the rounding mode (anything needing another mode should not be used when that mode is unavailable), and the default definition just calls __feholdexcept and __fesetround. Since we now have suitable inline do-nothing definitions of __feholdexcept and __fesetround for the cases of no exceptions and rounding modes, we can just rely on those inlines to achieve the same optimization as this macro definition. Thus, this patch removes those macro definitions (and the math_private.h headers containing them, when no longer needed after that removal). 2017-09-28Remove ancient __signbit inlinesWilco Dijkstra1-44/+0
Remove __signbit inlines from mathinline.h. Math.h already uses the builtin when supported, so additional inlines are only used on pre 4.0 GCCs. 2016-11-04Do not hardcode platform names in manual/libm-err-tab.pl (bug 14139).Joseph Myers1-0/+1
manual/libm-err-tab.pl hardcodes a list of names for particular platforms (mapping from sysdeps directory name to friendly name for the manual). This goes against the principle of keeping information about individual platforms in their corresponding sysdeps directory, and the list is also very out-of-date regarding supported platforms and their corresponding sysdeps directories. This patch fixes this by adding a libm-test-ulps-name file alongside each libm-test-ulps file. The script then gets the friendly name from that file, which is required to exist, so it no longer needs to allow for the mapping being missing. Tested for x86_64. [BZ #14139] * manual/libm-err-tab.pl (%pplatforms): Initialize to empty. (find_files): Obtain platform name from libm-test-ulps-name and store in %pplatforms. (canonicalize_platform): Remove. 2015-12-03math: add LDBL_CLASSIFY_COMPAT supportChris Metcalf1-0/+10
If a platform does not define "long-double-fcts = yes" in its Makefiles and it does define __NO_LONG_DOUBLE_MATH in its installed headers, it will currently create exported symbols for __finitel, __isinfl, and __isnanl that can't be reached from userspace by correct use of the finite(), isinf(), or isnan() macros in <math.h>. To avoid this situation, by default for such platforms we now no longer export these symbols, thus causing appropriate link-time errors. However, for platforms that previously exported these symbols, we continue to do so as compat symbols; this is enabled by adding LDBL_CLASSIFY_COMPAT to math_private.h for the platform. For tile, remove the now-unnecessary exports of those functions from libc and libm.

2014-12-30Fix libm feraiseexcept namespace (bug 17723).Joseph Myers1-2/+4
Various C90 and UNIX98 libm functions call feraiseexcept, which is not in those standards. This causes linknamespace test failures - except on x86 / x86_64, where feraiseexcept is inline (for the relevant constant arguments) in bits/fenv.h. This patch fixes this by making those functions call __feraiseexcept instead. All changes are applied to all architectures rather than considering the possibility that some might not be needed in some cases (e.g. x86) as it seems most maintainable to keep architectures consistent. Where __feraiseexcept does not exist, it is added, with feraiseexcept made a weak alias; where it is a strong alias, it is made weak. libm_hidden_def / libm_hidden_proto are used with __feraiseexcept (this might in some cases improve code generation for existing calls to __feraiseexcept in some code on some architectures). Where there are dummy feraiseexcept macros (on architectures without floating-point exceptions support, to avoid compile errors from references to undefined FE_* macros), corresponding dummy __feraiseexcept macros are added. And on x86, to ensure __feraiseexcept calls still get inlined, the inline function in bits/fenv.h is refactored so that most of it can be reused in an inline __feraiseexcept in a separate include/bits/fenv.h. Calls are changed in C90/UNIX98 functions, but generally not in functions missing from those standards. They are also changed in libc_fe* functions (on the basis that those might be used in any libm function), and in feupdateenv (on the same basis - may be used, via default libc_*, in any libm function - of course feupdateenv will need changing to __feupdateenv in a subsequent patch to make that fully namespace-clean). No __feraiseexcept is added corresponding to the feraiseexcept in powerpc bits/fenvinline.h, because that macro definition is conditional on !defined __NO_MATH_INLINES, and glibc libm is built with -D__NO_MATH_INLINES, so changing internal calls to use __feraiseexcept should make no difference. Tested for x86_64 (testsuite; the only change in disassembly of installed shared libraries is a slight code reordering in
