2024-12-31elf: Do not change stack permission on dlopen/dlmopenAdhemerval Zanella1-0/+7
If some shared library loaded with dlopen/dlmopen requires an executable stack, either implicitly because of a missing GNU_STACK ELF header (where the ABI default flags implies in the executable bit) or explicitly because of the executable bit from GNU_STACK; the loader will try to set the both the main thread and all thread stacks (from the pthread cache) as executable. Besides the issue where any __nptl_change_stack_perm failure does not undo the previous executable transition (meaning that if the library fails to load, there can be thread stacks with executable stacks), this behavior was used on a CVE [1] as a vector for RCE. This patch changes that if a shared library requires an executable stack, and the current stack is not executable, dlopen fails. The change is done only for dynamically loaded modules, if the program or any dependency requires an executable stack, the loader will still change the main thread before program execution and any thread created with default stack configuration. 2020-01-03elf: Move vDSO setup to rtld (BZ#24967)Adhemerval Zanella1-2/+0
This patch moves the vDSO setup from libc to loader code, just after the vDSO link_map setup. For static case the initialization is moved to _dl_non_dynamic_init instead. Instead of using the mangled pointer, the vDSO data is set as attribute_relro (on _rtld_global_ro for shared or _dl_vdso_* for static). It is read-only even with partial relro. It fixes BZ#24967 now that the vDSO pointer is setup earlier than malloc interposition is called. Also, vDSO calls should not be a problem for static dlopen as indicated by BZ#20802. The vDSO pointer would be zero-initialized and the syscall will be issued instead. Checked on x86_64-linux-gnu, i686-linux-gnu, aarch64-linux-gnu, arm-linux-gnueabihf, powerpc64le-linux-gnu, powerpc64-linux-gnu, powerpc-linux-gnu, s390x-linux-gnu, sparc64-linux-gnu, and sparcv9-linux-gnu. Linux/Mips kernels prior to 4.8 could potentially crash the user process when doing FPU emulation while running on non-executable user stack. Currently, gcc doesn't emit .note.GNU-stack for mips, but that will change in the future. To ensure that glibc can be used with such future gcc, without silently resulting in binaries that might crash in runtime, this patch forces RWX stack for all built objects if configured to run against minimum kernel version less than 4.8. * sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/mips/Makefile (test-xfail-check-execstack): Move under mips-has-gnustack != yes. (CFLAGS-.o*, ASFLAGS-.o*): New rules. Apply -Wa,-execstack if mips-force-execstack == yes. * sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/mips/configure: Regenerated. * sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/mips/configure.ac (mips-force-execstack): New var. This patch adds support for using the implementations of gettimeofday() and clock_gettime() provided by the kernel in the VDSO. The VDSO will always provide clock_gettime() as CLOCK_{REALTIME,MONOTONIC}_COARSE can be implemented regardless of platform. CLOCK_{REALTIME,MONOTONIC}, along with gettimeofday(), are only implemented on platforms which make use of either the CP0 count or GIC as their clocksource. On other platforms, the VDSO does not provide the __vdso_gettimeofday symbol, as it is never useful. The VDSO functions return ENOSYS when they encounter an unsupported request, in which case glibc should fall back to the standard syscall. This patch eliminates the mixture of SONAME information in shlib-versions files and SONAME information used to generate gnu/lib-names.h in makefiles, with the information in the makefiles being removed so all this information comes from the shlib-versions files. So that gnu/lib-names.h supports multiple ABIs, it is changed to be generated on the same basis as gnu/stubs.h: when there are multiple ABIs, gnu/lib-names.h is a wrapper header (the same header installed whatever ABI is being built) and separate headers such as gnu/lib-names-64.h contain the substantive contents (only one such header being installed by any glibc build). The rules for building gnu/lib-names.h were moved from Makeconfig to Makerules because they need to come after sysdeps makefiles are included (now that "ifndef abi-variants" is a toplevel conditional on the rules rather than $(abi-variants) being evaluated later inside the commands for a rule). Tested for x86_64 and x86 that the installed shared libraries are unchanged by this patch, and examined the installed gnu/lib-names*.h headers by hand. Also tested the case of a single ABI (where there is just a single header installed, again like stubs.h) by hacking abi-variants to empty for x86_64. I've moved the MIPS port from ports to the main sysdeps hierarchy. Beyond the README update, the move of the files was simply git mv ports/sysdeps/mips sysdeps/mips git mv ports/sysdeps/unix/mips sysdeps/unix/mips git mv ports/sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/mips sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/mips and in addition to the ChangeLog entries here, I put a note at the top of ports/ChangeLog.mips similar to those in other files.
